Outpatient Detoxification

A Safe, Less Expensive Detox Alternative without Hospitalization

ARRNO’s Ambulatory Detoxification Program (ADP) is designed to medically detoxify a patient who is actively engaged in his or her addiction, safely and discreetly in an outpatient environment. The program includes:

  • A safe and predictable withdrawal with reasonable comfort.

  • Education about the disease process of drug addiction.

  • Introduction to and participation in a 12-Step recovery program.

  • Assessment by a counselor with substance abuse expertise to determine the level of treatment that would be most beneficial for the patient.

  • Introduction to and participation in continuing care, intensive outpatient treatment, or residential treatment/partial hospitalization.

  • A determination if medical/physical consequences of the addiction warrant referral to a primary care physician or specialist.

  • A determination if there is psychiatric co-morbidity that would affect the course of treatment.

Program Content: The Ambulatory Detoxification Program provides a unique service to medically qualified patients. The program is a partial hospitalization for detoxification from substance abuse, a process traditionally treated through inpatient admission. The course of treatment is similar to an inpatient stay – three days, Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This process allows family interaction during the treatment period while providing a safe and stable medical detoxification at a significantly lower cost than traditional hospitalization. Following detoxification, each patient is referred to an appropriate level of care: Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or Residential Treatment Program (RTP), depending on specific needs.

Interventions:

There are many ways to address the physical dependence on narcotic substances. In most patients, detoxification using Buprenorphine with subsequent administration of Naltrexone, an opiate blocker, is the preferred method. In patients where this strategy has failed and in some patients who are unable to complete detoxification, maintenance with Buprenorphine may be the appropriate medication strategy.

The treatment team at ARRNO firmly believes that addictive disorder is a chronic and progressive illness that requires treatment. Detoxification and/or maintenance therapy with medications is a prerequisite for treatment, not treatment for addiction. To receive Buphrenorphine, all patients would be required to be in a treatment process either at ARRNO or in some other venue.

Other interventions include:

  • Thorough health history and social/family systems review

  • Psychiatric evaluation

  • Psychosocial evaluations

  • Direct observation of the client in a treatment environment
